Several local lodging properties, including our host venue, are offering special rates for conference attendees. Visit our Accommodations page for more information.

Sustainability

Our goal is to make our event Zero Waste. At a Zero Waste event, the discards produced are either compostable or recyclable, eliminating (or substantially reducing) the need for trash bins.

In order to reduce waste in the first place, we have limited the amount of paper sent to potential participants and have used email and our website to market our event. We will also be providing much of the conference information on CD and on our website, rather than publishing print materials.

In addition, all participants will receive a reusable tote bag and aluminum water bottle to use throughout the conference, instead of bottled drinking water. All meals throughout the conference will be served on reusable tableware (plates, glasses, silverware) whenever possible, and food scraps will be composted. At some of the Dine-Arounds, we may be using biodegradable tableware, which will be composted with food waste. The compostable products are made from corn, wheat, sugarcane or other natural starches as an alternative to the Styrofoam, plastic or plastic-coated paper tableware that would otherwise be sent to the landfill.

With full funding, we hope to make the event carbon-neutral. The purchase of carbon offsets would compensates for the carbon dioxide emissions from travel, electricity and other sources tied to planning activities and the event itself.

Weather

Mid-September temperatures can range from 49-75 degrees. However, it’s not unheard of to receive snow in September.

Fall Foliage

Fall colors should be close to peak during the event.
